How do you choose the right safety boots?
Short answer: match the safety rating (SB to S3) to your workplace hazards, pick steel-toe or composite-toe for the protection and weight you want, then get the fit right — a boot that doesn’t fit won’t get worn. This guide explains the South African safety ratings, the real difference between steel and composite, how to size correctly, and which boot suits which job.
Safety footwear in South Africa is certified to the SANS/ISO 20345 standard. The headline requirement is a protective toecap that withstands a 200-joule impact (roughly a 20 kg object dropped from about a metre) plus a heavy compression load. Everything above that baseline — midsole protection, water resistance, slip and heat resistance — is layered on through the rating codes below.
Safety boot ratings explained (SB, S1, S1P, S2, S3)
These are the codes you’ll see on the box. Each one includes everything in the levels before it:
| Rating | What it adds | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| SB | Basic: 200J protective toecap. | Light-duty where only toe protection is needed. |
| S1 | Toecap + antistatic + energy-absorbing heel + fuel/oil-resistant sole, closed heel. | Indoor, dry workshops and warehouses. |
| S1P | S1 + penetration-resistant midsole (against nails/sharp objects). | Construction, workshops with sharp debris underfoot. |
| S2 | S1 + water-resistant upper. | Wet or damp environments, outdoors. |
| S3 | S2 + penetration-resistant midsole + cleated (gripped) outsole. | Heavy construction, mining, sites — the all-round site boot. |
For most building sites, S3 is the sensible default. For a dry indoor workshop, S1 or S1P is usually enough.
Steel toe vs composite toe: which is better?
Both are certified to the same 200J protection — the difference is the material:
- Steel toe — thinner profile, very tough, and typically more affordable. It does conduct temperature (cold in winter, hot in summer) and will set off metal detectors.
- Composite toe — made from materials like fibreglass or carbon, so it’s lighter, doesn’t conduct heat or cold, and is non-metallic (airport- and detector-friendly). It’s slightly bulkier and often a little pricier.
If you’re on your feet all day or work in extreme temperatures, composite is worth the extra. If you want maximum toughness per rand, steel still does the job. The same logic applies to the midsole: a steel plate is proven and cheap, while a composite textile midsole is lighter and covers more of the foot.
Match the boot to the job
- General construction & sites — S3 boot, steel or composite toe, cleated slip-resistant sole.
- Welding & hot work — look for heat-resistant soles and quick-release or smooth fronts that won’t trap sparks; pair with the right PPE.
- Warehouse & indoor — lightweight S1/S1P; antistatic matters around electronics.
- Wet & outdoor work — S2/S3 with a water-resistant upper, or dedicated safety gumboots for standing water.
- Women on site — choose footwear built on a women’s last for a proper fit, like the ELLA ladies range, rather than a small men’s size.
How to get the size and fit right
- Measure late in the day, when your feet are at their largest, and measure both feet — fit the bigger one.
- Wear your work socks when trying boots on; a thicker sock changes the fit.
- Leave about a thumb’s width at the toe so your toes never touch the cap when walking downhill or carrying loads.
- The heel should be snug with minimal lift; the widest part of your foot should sit at the widest part of the boot.
- Break them in gradually — a few shorter wears before a full shift.
Caring for your safety boots
- Knock off mud and let them dry naturally — never on a heater, which cracks leather.
- Clean and treat leather uppers to keep water resistance up.
- Replace boots once the toecap has taken a serious impact, the sole tread is worn smooth, or the midsole is exposed — the protection is then compromised.

Frequently asked questions
What do the safety boot ratings S1, S2 and S3 mean?
They build on each other. S1 adds antistatic, energy absorption and an oil-resistant sole to the basic 200J toecap; S1P adds a penetration-resistant midsole; S2 adds a water-resistant upper; and S3 adds both the penetration-resistant midsole and a cleated grip sole. S3 is the all-round choice for construction sites.
Are steel toe or composite toe boots better?
Both protect to the same 200-joule standard. Steel toecaps are thinner, tougher and cheaper but conduct heat and cold and set off metal detectors. Composite toecaps are lighter, non-conductive and metal-detector friendly, but slightly bulkier and often a little more expensive. Choose composite for all-day comfort and temperature extremes, steel for maximum toughness per rand.
What safety boots do I need for construction?
For general construction, an S3-rated boot is the standard choice: it has a 200J toecap, a penetration-resistant midsole against nails, a water-resistant upper and a cleated slip-resistant sole. Add heat-resistant soles for hot work and antistatic properties around electronics.
How should safety boots fit?
Try them on late in the day with your work socks, fit the larger foot, and leave about a thumb’s width at the toe so your toes never touch the cap. The heel should be snug with minimal lift, and the widest part of your foot should sit at the widest part of the boot.
How often should I replace safety boots?
Replace them after any serious impact to the toecap, once the sole tread is worn smooth, or if the midsole becomes exposed. At that point the certified protection is compromised, even if the boot still looks wearable.
